PV Design Engineer

Location: Chicago, IL, United States
The PV Residential Design Engineer will work directly alongside of the Project Manager, designing PV systems for residential solar systems. This role will enforce strict adherence to industry best practices, National Electrical Code standards, quality control, and superior engineering protocols throughout the lifecycle of solar assets.
 Primary Responsibilities:
  • Builds system plan set documents including system design, electrical mapping, equipment selection, etc. to prepare for utility approval documents and installation
  • Retrofit designs after system has been installed to finalize documents that will be submitted to finance partner/utility company
  • Utilize design software applications to accurately build solar systems that maximize both customer and EPC benefit
  • Review plan-sets and technical design specifications to ensure solar assets not only satisfy technical requirements but are in the best interest of IGS and our customers
  • Design residential scale PV systems
  • Visit project sites and conduct thorough physical inspections to ensure deployed solar assets are of the highest quality
  • Perform “remote” quality assurance inspections using photographs and plan sets
  • Provide guidance to sales and operations teams on evaluating new opportunities
  • Model projects with PVSyst or Helioscope
  • Conduct both physical and remote inspections on projects in process and upon completion to ensure compliance to contact and specifications
  • Provide technical guidance to operations team on evaluating designs, potential projects, and equipment
  • Research and provide direction on key solar industry developments; including, equipment, vendors, partners, competitors, trends, best practices and ever-evolving solar landscape.
  • Continuous process improvement and optimization
Required Skills:
  • Prefer a strong understanding of all relevant codes including a demonstrated experience with utilities
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with project managers, clients, consulting engineers, design, and technical personnel as well as manufacturing partners
  • Prefer to be open minded, creative, and possess the ability to modify and expand theories to find creative solutions within the confines of the code
  • Shall be confident; must possess the ability to substantiate code interpretations and mathematically prove design concepts
  • The successful candidate must be a high energy, resourceful and organized engineering professional
  • The ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects is a must
  • Experience drafting or reviewing engineering services contracts
  • Solid written and oral communication skills are a must
  • Ability to effectively communicate design concepts and lead meetings between clients, project engineers, code officials and third-party consultants.
  • Experience with cost estimation of designs preferred
  • Computer proficiency with; AutoCAD,
  • MS Project and MS Excel experience preferred
  • Minimum Education and Experience:
  • Proficient in PVSyst
  • Expert knowledge of the National Electric Code and other industry guidelines
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Advanced business software skills (Microsoft: Excel, Project, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or another related field required
  • 1-5 years of experience in PV system design
  • NABCEP certification preferred
