Utility-Scale Solar Engineer

Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership to our team in designing medium and large utility scale projects.  Responsibilities include the following:
General Design and engineer utility scale PV solar systems.
Apply value engineering techniques specific to utility scale systems.
Develop construction documents using AutoCAD.
Travel to project sites from time to time to gather site-specific data, as required.
Site assessment and analysis both from on-site data collection and network tools.
Site specific production analysis of PV arrays using models such as PVsyst
Complete utility interconnection applications and building permit applications.
Develop detailed equipment specifications.
Coordinate activities between clients, utilities, permit agencies, contractors, and other engineering firms.
Contributing to or writing technical papers.
Integrating energy storage systems into the solar PV system.
Provide mentorship and training to new and junior engineering personnel.
Coordinate with in-house engineers on the construction documents.
Manage our in-house resources that will do the detailed interconnection designs.
Review drawings to ensure compliance with all requirements of the utility and IA.
Perform and support a variety of interconnection studies with outside utilities
At handoff, ensure requirements for the design are known by the engineering team.
We have a team of very technical engineers that can be leveraged at any point, but we need one SME to manage the overall interconnection aspect of the project.  
Coordinate 3rd party engineering firms
Coordinate civil and structural engineering firms
Substation design firms.
Electrical Engineering
Value engineering.
Create designs & drawings.
Prepare equipment specifications.
Specify pad mounted and pole mounted equipment.
Design protection and relaying systems.
Review contractor’s equipment submittals and shop drawings.
Electrical Studies: Short circuit, load flow, coordination, arc flash, etc.
Site assessment and analysis both from on-site data collection and network tools.
Attend system startup and utility witness tests.
Review commissioning reports and testing results.
Manage the interconnection application and agreement process; 
Create preliminary One Line & Three Line diagrams.
Include high level relaying or effective grounding designs as required.
Fill out interconnection application technical sections.
Review feasibility or impact study, respond to comments.
Negotiate favorable terms in the final agreement.
Estimate total interconnection costs and timelines.
Track high saturation areas of the grid and impact on IC cost & schedule.
Knowledge of Utility Standards & Incentive Requirements
Understand each utility’s requirements, handbook standards.
Develop relationships and a network of key personnel at utilities.
Maintaining a current working knowledge of utility regulatory agency requirements.
Review NERC, PUCT, ERCOT, PJM, MISO, and CAISO standards.
Knowledge of State or utility incentive programs’ technical requirements.
Ensure our designs are compliant with all requirements.
Manage the design all aspects of the AC interconnection on commercial and utility scale PV solar systems & energy storage systems.
Standardize processes and procedures.
Coordinate activities between clients, utilities, permit agencies, contractors, and other engineering firms.
Integrating energy storage systems into the solar PV system.
Contributing to or writing technical papers.
Prepare a variety of technical reports, documents, and correspondence. 
 
Required Qualifications
Considered a subject matter expert for utility scale solar.
4+ years’ experience designing solar PV systems.
Mastery of the National Electrical Code
4+ years’ experience working with AutoCAD with an understanding of layer control, dimensioning and scaling, sheet sets, blocks, xrefs, line weights, plot files, and file transmission.
Medium Voltage design experience
2+ years’ experience managing a team 
Ability to communicate among construction, technical and non-technical personnel, both internally and outside the company.
4+ years’ experience installing utility scale systems.
Experience in traditional building design with a MEP firm.
Substation design experience
Short circuit, coordination, arc flash studies
SKM PowerTools, ETAP, and other software.
Experience with Solar PV design software including: SunDat and Helios 
Energy storage systems
Hands on experience commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting solar PV systems. 
NABCEP certification.
MS in electrical engineering, or other related discipline.
