Energy Storage Engineer

Location: Edison, New Jersey, United States
The Energy Storage Engineer position will play an integral role to deliver customer focused battery energy storage solutions for capacity and energy markets.  The candidate will lead the engineering of new projects as well as execute designs for in-house projects, including systems integrating with existing power generation assets or proposed standalone projects both in front and behind the meter.  Responsibilities will include evaluating load profiles for AC coupled and DC coupled Battery Energy Storage systems for a variety of applications, they will take part in evaluating equipment for our procurement group and they will be lead DC and AC system design.  The candidate should have a firm understanding of the battery and energy management control systems, have a thorough understanding of different battery types and sub chemistries as well as a solid background in distribution and transmission system architecture and regulations.

• Lead design of megawatt scale battery energy storage systems, including sizing the battery and battery PCS appropriate for the project.
• Develop battery container layouts using surveys when available.
• Coordinate with electrical and civil and PV engineering team for complete packages for installation
• Develop single-line and three-line diagrams with required electrical details for the battery system in accordance with NEC, IEEE, NESC, utility interconnection tariffs and requirements, and local AHJ as necessary
• Review load profiles and Engineer Battery Energy Storage Systems to meet project goals.
• Model how much energy the system will recover on PV coupled battery systems.
• Lead the project interconnection approval process as the primary point of contact with the interconnecting utilities from the application process through final design approval
• Attend meetings with clients, State and local permitting authorities, subcontractors, and vendors regarding engineering and technical issues related to the battery system.
• Coordinate, obtain and integrate BMS, EMS and SCADA designs for the battery system from third party monitoring companies,
• Understands AC Coupled and DC coupled Battery Energy Storage systems
• Develop technical specifications and scopes of work for engineering firms and contractors
• Conducts on-site battery system commissioning and troubleshooting

• A 4-year degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred)
• 5 years power systems Engineering experience • Experience with electric utility substation, transmission and distribution systems
• Experience engineering utility protection schemes and controls
• Experience with power conversion equipment • Proficiency in AutoCAD
• Proficiency in PVSYST
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
