Transmission Interconnection Engineer

Job Description:
The Transmission Interconnection Engineer will manage the interconnection process for utility-scale solar energy projects in North America.  Identifying MW generation injection capability at point of interconnection subject to reliability constraints in various planning regions such as MISO, PJM, SPP, ERCOT, CAISO, ISO-NE and NYISO.  Effectively analyze and creatively resolve bulk power system issues with the goal of reducing or eliminating the interconnection costs for active wind and solar projects.  Must be able to identify the drivers of constraints and communicate potential impacts to proposed solar projects.  Successfully present findings to other system planning personnel with the intent of changing or reducing the amount of system upgrades required in order to improve project cost and schedule.  Assist in design of wind farm and solar electrical collection systems (34.5kV), substations (34.5kV – transmission voltage 115kV – 230kV – 345kV), and project owned transmission lines.  Manage interconnection feasibility assessment and application for early stage development of solar PV projects.  Prepare technical aspects of interconnection applications and manage.  Engage with equipment suppliers and consultants for development of design drawings, dynamic models, or other specialized deliverables.  Manage RFP process for selection of EPC contractor and major equipment(PV panel, Inverters etc.) suppliers for utility scale solar project.  Manage construction of utility scale solar project in compliance with all agreements, permits and applicable regulations.

  • Bachelor degree or higher in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Electric Power Systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working directly to manage utility scale renewable energy generation projects interconnection to transmission system.
  • Familiarity with NERC/NPCC/ISO transmission planning practices. Must have the ability to communicate with system planning personnel to determine the exact procedures used to perform feasibility studies and system impact studies within ERCOT, MISO, PJM, ISO-NE, NYISO, CAISO, etc.
  • Experienced to prepare utility scale solar project preliminary design and interconnection application for submission to the utility for interconnection study.
  • Individual must be experienced in Siemens PSS/E  and GE PLSF steady state, short circuit, and dynamics software modules with a high level of experience. No training will be provided; this job requires being able to understand what is driving thermal/voltage constraints and/or transient stability issues and propose the most cost effective solution by experimenting with bulk power system topology changes.
  • Experienced to manage RFP process for selection of EPC contractor and mjor equipment for utility scale solar project and project management during construction of utility scale solar project.
  • Must be fully trained in Transient stability, Harmonic Analysis, Short circuit, load flow and voltage analysis.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, up to 10~20% of the time.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
