The Solar Project Engineer will be the main technical resource for commercial and utility solar energy systems providing engineering support throughout the proposal, design, and construction of the project. The position will be involved with many aspects of the project lifecycle beginning with feasibility evaluation including site visits, system design, performance modeling, managing outside consultants, utility coordination and engineering project management.
The Solar Project Engineer will design Solar PV systems including 1-line diagrams, array layouts (ground mount, roof, and canopy), fence and road layout. Layouts to be performed in Helioscope and AutoCAD. Establish Solar PV basis of design including module selection, string sizing and racking-table design incorporating string/cable limits, ground coverage ratio, inverter and racking selection, utility requirements, inverter loading ratio, and POCC design. Knowledge of governing codes and standards, jurisdictional requirements in states such as MA, NY, NJ, MD and Illinois, as well as solar design best practices a must. Knowledge of cost impacts of various products and designs necessary.
Perform energy performance modeling using PVSyst software and open source as well as proprietary solar resource databases (CPR-SolarAnywhere). Primary use is of PVSyst, but some knowledge of NREL System Advisor Model (SAM) and Plant Predict is preferred.
Assess site conditions and anticipate issues that may arise during permitting and construction. Familiar with civil and layout practices, racking products and structural design practices with ability to generate accurate, highly‐detailed permit drawings.
Research and evaluate existing and new technologies with team members with ability to select products that are acceptable to third party / independent engineering evaluation.
Apply knowledge of engineering principles and practices when analyzing current technical tools.
Maintain knowledge of the latest products, design techniques, and construction strategies.
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering
3+ years of experience in commercial or utility- scale solar PV system design, particularly with rooftop, ground mount (fixed and tracker), landfill/brownfield ground mounts, and canopy/carport systems
Must be proficient in Helioscope, AutoCAD and related Autodesk software.
Must be proficient in PVSyst and related solar performance modeling software.
Demonstrated electrical, structural and mechanical design skills, and the ability to generate accurate, highly-detailed permit and Issue-for-Bid drawings.
Ability to generate accurate and detailed design drawings and PVsyst models at a fast pace with the expectations of changes on short notice.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills, including the ability to communicate in a positive manner with project managers and sale team members.
Good problem solving and critical thinking abilities and a proactive work ethic.
Experience with review and approval of third-party engineering, and on-site quality control.
Knowledge of National Electric Code and OSHA
Experience with and understanding of utility PPA and Interconnection requirements.
PE with ability to stamp single-line and three line diagrams for utility interconnection applications a plus.
Moderate travel required.
